The Gambino crime family is one of the "Five Families" that dominates organized crime activities in New York City, United States, within the nationwide criminal phenomenon known as the Mafia (or Cosa Nostra). The group is named after Carlo Gambino, boss of the family at the time of the McClellan hearings in 1963, when the structure of organized crime first gained public attention. The group's operations extend from New York and the eastern seaboard to California. Its illicit activities include labor and construction racketeering, gambling, loansharking, extortion, money laundering, prostitution,[4] fraud, hijacking, pier thefts, and fencing. The family was one of the five families that were founded in New York after the Castellammarese War of 1931. For most of the next quarter-century, it was a minor player in organized crime. Its most prominent member during this time was its underboss Albert Anastasia, who rose to infamy as the operating head of the underworld's enforcement arm, Murder, Inc. He remained a power even after Murder, Inc. was smashed in the late 1940s, and took over his family in 1951—by all accounts, after murdering the family's founder Vincent Mangano. The rise began in 1957 of what was the most powerful crime family in America for a time, when Anastasia was assassinated while sitting in a barber chair at the Park Sheraton Hotel in Manhattan. Experts believe that Anastasia's underboss Carlo Gambino helped orchestrate the hit to take over the family. Gambino partnered with Meyer Lansky to control gambling interests in Cuba. The family's fortunes grew through 1976, when Gambino appointed his brother-in-law Paul Castellano as boss upon his death. Castellano infuriated upstart capo John Gotti, who orchestrated Castellano's murder in 1985. Gotti's downfall came in 1992, when his underboss Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano decided to cooperate with the FBI. Gravano's cooperation brought down Gotti, along with most of the top members of the Gambino family. The family is currently headed by Frank Cali.

In 1930, the Castellammarese War started between Masseria and Salvatore Maranzano, the new leader of Cola Schirò's Castellammarese gang, for control of Italian-American organized crime in New York. Mineo was a casualty; he and Ferrigno were shot dead during an assassination attempt on Masseria on November 5, 1930. In April 1931, Masseria was murdered in a restaurant by several of his gang members who had defected to Maranzano. Maranzano declared himself the boss of all bosses and reorganized all the New York gangs into five crime families. Maranzano appointed Frank Scalise as head of the old D'Aquila/Mineo gang, now designated as one of New York's new five families. In September 1931, Maranzano was himself assassinated in his office by a squad of contract killers. The main beneficiary (and organizer of both hits) was Charlie "Lucky" Luciano. Luciano kept Maranzano's five families and added a Commission to mediate disputes and prevent more gang warfare. Also in 1931, Luciano replaced Scalise with Vincent Mangano as head of the D'Aquila/Mineo gang, now the Mangano crime family. Mangano also received a seat on the new Commission. The modern era of the Cosa Nostra had begun. How the Gambinos Created History's Most Powerful Mafia Family Talk about patronizing somebody, I mean the people would come in and they would fall all over themselves to kiss his reign, it would be like visiting the Pope.] This is Carlo Gambino. He might look like a jolly elderly man. But for half a century, he led the most powerful, dangerous, and blood-thirsty organized crime family in the United States. This guy was calling the shots, and those shots ended in murder. How he himself avoided being murdered is an astonishing mystery to me. The Gambinos did it all: racketeering, gambling, loansharking, extortion, money laundering, prostitution, fraud, hijacking, and fencing. But somehow, they remained hidden from the public eye. Illegal business was thriving while the police were helpless. And this lasted for whole generations, each mob boss passing the crown to another until a strange twist in the story led to the end of the Gambinos as we know them. #history #truestory #historical

Current Mafia Bosses in 2022: All 5 Active Families & Bosses There is no denying that the world of crime offers a cold habitat for its members, its allies, and the outsiders, who are usually the victims of criminal activity. In the past few decades, there have been many crime lords who have come and gone, but their businesses have survived under the control of their protégés. However, in today’s video, we’re gonna tell you about Five Mafia Bosses and about their active families. So, no one knows how many people are in the family yet. However, the FBI estimates there are around 3,000 Italian-American organized crime groups operating in the United States. But surprisingly, not every mafia family has an official boss in 2022. Some families have "acting bosses" or "street bosses" who run things. There are some families that have the same boss for decades, like the Luccheses and Brunos. Occasionally, the real boss has died, been killed, or retired, so it's hard to find out who he is or what his hierarchy is. Let's take a look at some of the most active ones first. And on number one we have, The Nose. Over the past eight years, Michael "The Nose" Mancuso has become the boss of the Bonanno Family. In 2004, Joey Massino became a government witness and belonged to the Bonanno family for a few years before he became the boss. He is now Mancuso's street boss, but he's also serving as underboss. However, in the beginning, Mancuso was in the Purple Gang. Basically, they were Italian enforcers who ran the heroin trade in East Harlem. In fact, the Purple Gang did jobs for the five families, but mostly on their own. And eventually, Mancuso became part of the Bonanno family. And as of 2004, Joe was acting underboss. Nose has a pretty sordid past. He served 10 years for manslaughter when his wife Evelina died. He's been implicated in a few murders, including Bonanno capo Gerlando Sciascia's. He tied Mancuso to that killing with "Big Joe" Massino. Then in 2008, Mancuso was convicted of another murder and sentenced to 15 years. #crime #mob #mafia

The backdrop is fresh off the Castellammarse war, and the government has begun to apply pressure on J. Edgar Hoover, who had been trying to keep the mafia off the radar for some time. A little meeting in 1957 in upstate New York would change the trajectory of the mafia fovever, but before that meeting could happen, Vito Genovese, had a few ideas of his own of how to overtake the commission and organized crime, but he needed a silent, but deadly partner and he would find that in Carlo Gambino. The Gambino crime family (pronounced [ɡamˈbiːno]) is one of the "Five Families" that dominate organized crime activities in New York City, United States, within the nationwide criminal phenomenon known as the Mafia (or Cosa Nostra). The group, which went through five bosses between 1910 and 1957, is named after Carlo Gambino, boss of the family at the time of the McClellan hearings in 1963, when the structure of organized crime first gained public attention. The group's operations extend from New York and the eastern seaboard to California. Its illicit activities include labor and construction racketeering, gambling, loansharking, extortion, money laundering, prostitution,[2] fraud, hijacking, pier thefts[clarification needed], and fencing. He remained in power even after Murder, Inc. was smashed in the late 1940s, and took over his family in 1951—by all accounts, after murdering the family's founder Vincent Mangano. The rise of what was the most powerful crime family in America for a time began in 1957, when Anastasia was assassinated while sitting in a barber chair at the Park Sheraton Hotel in Manhattan. Gotti's downfall came in 1992, when his underboss Salvatore "Sammy Bull" Gravano decided to cooperate with the FBI. The reputed boss of New York's Gambino crime family was struck at least six times when he was shot to death in front of his Staten Island home not long after dinnertime Wednesday, marking the city's first mafia don killing in more than three decades. Francesco "Franky Boy" Cali, 53, was found with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso outside his home on Hilltop Terrace in Todt Hill. The 911 caller had initially reported a man had been run over by a vehicle on purpose and that he was trapped; the caller then said he had also been shot multiple times. Cops found Cali bullet-ridden when they responded to the call around 9:20 p.m. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.. A suspect fled the scene in a blue pickup truck, the NYPD said. Authorities canvassed the scene overnight, roping off the entire front yard as evidence markers littered the pavement near an SUV parked out front. Anchor Natalie Pasquarella also reports on a plan to protect lower Manhattan from climate change and a found set of wedding rings. The origins of the Gambino crime family can be traced back to the D'Aquila gang of Manhattan. Salvatore "Toto" D'Aquila was an influential emigrant from Palermo, Sicily who joined the Morello gang of East Harlem. Founded in the 1890s, the Morellos were the first Italian criminal gang in New York. As other gangs formed in New York, they acknowledged Giuseppe Morello as their boss of bosses.[5] In 1906, D'Aquila's name first appeared on police records for running a confidence scam.

A number of high-ranking Colombo crime family members, including 87-year-old street boss Andrew "Mush" Russo and an 87-year-old underboss, 83-year-old Benjamin "Benji" Castellazo, were arrested early Tuesday by the NYPD and FBI in connection with a wide-ranging labor racketeering and extortion fraud scheme. The 19-count indictment unsealed later Tuesday in Brooklyn federal court charges a total of 14 defendants, including 10 members and associates of the Colombo crime family, with multiple schemes in a long-running effort to infiltrate and take control of a Queens-based labor union and its affiliated healthcare benefit program. They are also accused of conspiring to commit fraud in connection with workplace safety certifications. A Bonanno crime family solder has also been named in the case. Russo faces charges of racketeering, as does Castellazo and consigliere Ralph DiMatteo. Alleged Colombo crime family captains Theodore Perisco, Jr., Richard Ferrara and Vincent Ricciardo are charged with racketeering, along with solder Michael Uvino and associates Thomas Costa and Domenick Ricciardo. John Ragano of the Bonanno crime family is charged with loansharking, fraud and drug trafficking offenses, officials said. Twelve of the 14 defendants were arrested Tuesday in New York and New Jersey and are scheduled to be arraigned in Brooklyn federal court later in the day. A 13th defendant was arrested in North Carolina and will be arraigned there, while the 14th defendant, Dimatteo, remains at large. According to the indictment, top Colombo crime family members and alleged co-conspirators extorted the labor union management by threatening bodily harm to force decisions that benefitted the crime family. Since 2001, one of the captains and his cousin allegedly collected part of a senior labor union official's salary by threatening to harm both him and his family. Beginning in late 2019, the defendants allegedly broadened the extortion effort to force that official and others at the labor union and its affiliated health fund to select vendors for contracts who were associated with the Colombo family. The defendants allegedly sought to divert more than $10,000 a month from the health fund's assets to the administration of the Colombo family, prosecutors said. Among other examples, prosecutors say as recently as June 21 Ricciardo was recorded on the phone threatening to kill the labor union official if he didn't comply.
